In-situ observation and determination of the enthalpy of the order-disorder transition in Cu3Pd2 alloy

ABSTRACT
Cu-Pd alloy around 50 at.% composition display a reversible structural transition B2 (or L20)->A1 around 600 Cwith the congruent point located at composition Cu3Pd2. In-situ X-ray diffraction observations of Cu3Pd2 showedthat this transition is of the first kind, with a strong hysteresis, spread over two temperature ranges in heating and incooling, just like the case of the thermoelastic martensites. The disordering transition enthalpy is determined throughintegration of the peak obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) on the exact composition Cu3Pd2 and leadsto the value H = 24.3±0.1 J/g at 605.4 C ±0.8. This value is relatively high compared with other typical disorderingtransitions of the first kind, such as AuCu.
