Labyrinth as opposed to the linear aims to investigate the relationship between the visual texts of Portuguese Baroque poetry and modernist works such as Mallarmé´s Le Livre, James Joyce´s Finnegans Wake, and Ana Hatherly´s O escritor, starting from the concept of labyrinth as a structure or network that offers different ways of reading or of interpretation , an idea close to the concept of work in progress, formulated by Haroldo de Campos and Umberto Eco. The article discusses historical aspects related to the architecture of labyrinths, their transposition to the literary form, still in ancient times, their development during the baroque period and possible parallels with avant-garde works from the second half of the 20thcentury and the beginning of the 21st century that demand different manners of participation from the reader, in a “reinvention” of reading
