This article deals with the conceptual field of the russian notion of destiny, trying to determine its originality in the Russian culture by linguistic means. Etymological data make indeed possible to reduce the perception of destiny to two basic ideas, ‘jugement’ and ‘division’, whereas the combinative capacities of the words belonging to this notional field bring to distinguish three models for destiny, regarding names pointing to destiny as a ‘fatal power’, and two models, regarding words refering to destiny as a result of such a ‘fatal power’s’ intervention. Moreover, the linguistic analysis shows that the language fits to the evolution of the concept (it gave, century after century, to human being a more active part in the choice of its destiny) and to the changes that occurred within the conceptunal field itself, changes that lead to a new distribution of the combinative capacities of the words that come within this scope.
