ABSTRACT
The Union of the Principalities was a key event in Romanian history and played asignificant role in the formation of the Romanian state. Melchisedec Stefanescu (1823-1892), leadingfigure of the age, participated actively inthe front seeking the Unification of the RomanianPrincipalities and was one of the leading militants of the union, along with his contemporaries. Hismultilateral personality (scholar, priest and writer) was completed by that of a patriot. The conclusionof my article is that hisrole and involvement, far from being secondary, made possible the transitionfrom tradition to modernity and progress. The research is mostly synchronous, analyzing theinteraction between cultures in order to create a cultural diagnosis for the eighteenth century.
