Network models of human memory hold that conceptsare stored in the cognitive system in a form of a structurethat resembles a network. A single node of a networkcorresponds to each concept; however, semanticassociations among the concepts are mirrored in the formof ‘paths’ that link nodes that they find the most suitable.Processing of a concrete concept leads to activation ofsuch a node. The activation is spread across the ‘paths’going out from the node of ‘paths’ and reaches thosenodes which are semantically related to the source one.This results in further, better processing of the concepts.The process is tested with the help of a procedure ofsemantic priming. The subjects are given two semanticallyrelated words. Presentation of the first word causesstimulation of activation in the network node whichcorresponds to the second word before the latter is evenshown. Thus, when the word appears it will be processedmore quickly and correctly than words for whichactivation from the source node did not come. In thearticle there is a review of research on the phenomenonof semantic priming in schizophrenia. The results of theresearch indicate that there is a considerable disparity inthe course of this phenomenon in the conditions ofautomatic semantic activation. Some experiments showthat there was an increase of semantic priming in patientswith schizophrenia. Others, however, show attenuationof the process. There are also studies which show nosignificant differences as regards strength of semanticpriming between schizophrenics and control groups. Theresults of the research when it comes to semantic primingin conditions which enable engagement of the attentionprocesses clearly indicate that there is attenuation of theprocess in patients with schizophrenia.
