The cyclic hormonal changes that regulate the menstrual cycle are a significant biological influence on the female body, and one that has both physical and emotional ramifications. Menstruation is governed by tightly orchestrated changes in the levels of ovarian estrogen and progesterone, which produce varying responses in diverse tissues and organs. The majority of reproductive-age women have at least one physical or emotional change during the time preceding menstruation. In women whose lives are affected significantly by their symptoms, the diagnoses of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) may apply. PMS generally involves physical and relatively mild psychological symptoms, whereas PMDD is associated with more serious psychological symptoms.Once a diagnosis is made, this condition may be greatly relieved by various treatment modalities.
