Personality traits, especially temperamental dimensions, which show high genetic loading, might be consideredfactors predisposing to psychiatric disorders. Thestrategy of endophenotypes – constructs with geneticbackground less complex than clinical syndromes, suchas anorexia nervosa – might be used to reduce theheterogeneity of psychiatric disorders. Thepsychobiological model of personality comprises fourdimensions of temperament – Novelty seeking, Harmavoidance, Reward dependence and Persistence. Patientswith anorexia nervosa score in two of them – Harmavoidance and Persistence – higher than matchedcontrols from the general population. The abovetemperamental dimensions also meet, with regard toanorexia nervosa, several other criteria required forendophenotypic traits. Enrichment of phenotypedescription of anorexia nervosa with personality traitsmay facilitate study of the genetic background of thisdisorder.
