A Quantitative Study for Online Encyclopedias:Comparison of Wikipedia and Knol

ABSTRACT
Two online encyclopedias, Wikipedia and Knol, were quantitativelycompared in this study. Six indices, page views per year, text words,readability, cited times per year, numbers of references and types ofreferences (including ratio and rating of journal, book, and networkresource), were used to compare the two encyclopedias. Wilcoxon signedrank test was used to investigate significance of the differences. The research results showed that page views per year, cited times per year, numbers of references, and rating of journals (one of indices of types of references) were statistically signicant with condence level at 0.95, but the remaining indices were not. Besides, the readability of Wikipedia and Knol were 12. e scores for readability of these topics were too high and thus they were too dicult for general public of United States.
