ABSTRACT
This paper gave an overview of recent trends in internationalhuman rights law with a view to knowing how the rights ofwomen in Africa are balanced against State and customarylaws. Women's rights to self-determination are embedded inseveral international treaties, such as the InternationalConvention on Elimination of All Forms of DiscriminationAgainst Women, and the Dakar Declaration. The rightencompasses the right for recognition and opportunities tochallenge existing laws so as to bring meaningful change towomen's lives.
