ABSTRACT
The condensation of suitably substituted salicylaldehydes with diethylmalonate in biphase medium using phase transfer catalyst results in to the formation of ethylcoumarin-3-carboxylates. Ethylcoumarin-3-carboxylates so formed on hydrolysis gives coumarin-3-carboxylic acid in high yield.
