ABSTRACT
The tributary relationship between the kingdoms of Srivijaya-Suvarnabhumi and Mataram with China existed since the second half of the 7th century A.D. Such relationship can be considered as the manifestation of the political and socio-economical situation in the Malay Archipelago then. From the year 670 A.D. to 1097 A.D., there is a noticeable alternation of tribute sending from these three kingdoms to China. According to the Chinese sources, only one of these kingdoms sent their tributes at one time. Such a pattern has led to differing interpretations of the interactions between these three kingdoms. This article attempts to explain the socio-economical and political condition in these three kingdoms that triggered such a pattern in the tributary relationship with China.
