ABSTRACT
Presented in the form of a discussion, this paper tries, firstly, to depict some conceptual designs, activities and perspectives of modern cartography. Secondly, "metacartosemiotics" shall be introduced as a new concept that implies various changes in the range of theoretical cartography. These changes are of both methodical and methodological kind and allow us to outline an evolutionary geo-communicational framework of cartographic theory.
